Entrepreneurs and professionals tend to live busy, hectic lives. We go from meeting to meeting and from phone call to phone call. We travel often and rest little. This lifestyle is usually a necessary part of growing your business or advancing in your career. Living in an eternal state of busyness though, can ultimately be destructive if you don’t take care of yourself in the process.
Without the life-changing force of meditation, you might find yourself achieving some of your goals, but not enjoying the process or feeling any satisfaction. Worse yet, you might end up super busy, not achieving your goals, and not enjoying the process! When I discovered the powerful tool of meditation a few years ago, it changed everything for me.
There’s a reason that companies like Google, Goldman Sachs and Farmers Insurance hire experts to train their staffs in meditation. It works! Ray Dalio is the founder of the investment firm Bridgewater Associates. He’s been on Time’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world, and Forbes lists him as the 30th richest person in America in 2014. He’s been meditating for many decades and had this to say about its importance: “I think meditation has been the single biggest reason for whatever success I’ve had.” That’s quite a statement! I believe that if you begin to practice meditation, you’ll see that it will bring you unprecedented success in what you do as well. I want to share with you 5 of the key reasons that meditation will vastly improve your business, and your whole life.
1. Meditation keeps you grounded
Ramani Ayer, former CEO of the Hartford Financial Services Group (a Fortune 500 Company), has been meditating for more than 25 years. He said, “It has demonstrably reduced my stress and helped to maintain my good health, and has immeasurably benefited my family and business relationships. Importantly, it has helped me to make clearer, more effective decisions on the job.” Meditation can literally improve your relationships, your health and your business success! It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and the minute-to minute and lose sight of the big picture. Taking a break from the clutter in your mind helps to put it all in perspective.
When you went into business, or began your career, you did it with purpose! You had a huge vision to help people, make a difference, live in freedom, be a blessing to future generations. Meditation will help you keep that vision clear and in the forefront of your mind.
Bill Ford, the Executive Chairman of the Ford Motor Company, used meditation to successfully guide Ford through one of the most difficult periods in the history of the auto industry. By keeping you grounded in your vision, meditation can help you to overcome challenging times as well.
2. Meditation keeps you grateful
By letting go of worries and preoccupations during your meditation time, you automatically focus more on what you have to be thankful for. I like to take it a step further by making a gratitude list during my meditation time. No matter how bad you might feel, or what may have happened, there’s always something to be thankful for. The very air that you breathe is a gift! Let your meditation time be a reminder that life is good and each day is to be cherished.
It’s stated in the Harvard Mental Health Newsletter that, “gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.” When you focus on things that make you happy, you’ll reap even more happy outcomes.
3. Meditation keeps you goal-oriented
Though meditation is gaining popularity, many people still see it as some sort of super-mystical practice that only monks can do. This couldn’t be further from the truth! I use my meditation time to envision myself obtaining my goals and living my ideal life. When you have a goal you are trying to reach, you must first see it in your mind’s eye. I believe you have to see it and believe it before you manifest it. Spend time in the morning meditating on how you want the outcome to be. Dream big, ponder questions and write down the answers that come during your meditation time.
Another way to aid your meditation time is to use focus props: create a vision board or Journal and keep it near your bed so it’s the first thing you see before going to sleep and when waking up in the morning. You can even paste a photo on the ceiling that you meditate on at night before you go to sleep. These focus props will keep you focused on very specific goals. I created the I.M.E.JOURNAL to aid you in this meditation process! Daily I keep my life on course by taking time to practice meditation and visualize myself obtaining my goals. I see my future playing out exactly as I desire it to be. I see myself living the good life and experiencing success after success. When was the last time you stopped and meditated on what you wanted to happen in your future? What mental movie do you need to play over and over again in your mind’s eye to program your mind for success? When you use the vivid power of your imagination, your mind can’t differentiate between what is imagined and what has actually happened. That means that you can experience your ultimate success RIGHT NOW just by closing your eyes and visualizing it. It’s time you harness that power and put it to work for you!
4. Meditation gets you ready for what’s to come
Your daily meditation can be a powerful tool for preparing and rehearsing your ideal outcomes. I use my quiet time to walk through the day’s events before they ever happen. I picture each meeting, presentation, conversation or launch in detail, and ‘walk’ all the way through it in my mind’s eye. I see each person saying and doing the things I need them to for my perfect outcome to manifest. I see myself saying the right things and doing the right things in each situation.
I can’t tell you how many meetings I’ve sat in and watched things transpire just as they did in my time of meditation. A mental dress-rehearsal is just as good as a physical one! Style icon and former pop star, Victoria Beckham knows about the power of this practice. She says, “I’m a very driven, ambitious, positive person. But I’m a spiritual person as well. I believe in creative visualization.” Use your meditation time this week to see what you can accomplish by visualizing it before it happens.
5. Meditation keeps you gainful
Your meditation time will not just make you a happier, more fulfilled person (though it will do that), it will increase your bottom line also!
When you get up early in the morning, go to your sweet spot and actually sit and meditate, you will gain clarity and tap into your intuition. Write down ideas, hunches and thoughts that come to you. Then start following your gut feelings, and go with your hunches. Sometimes we crowd out our gut feelings and override ideas that come to us, choosing to ignore them until later. However, there’s something great about acting fast on your hunches. My most successful moments have come when I followed my intuition.
When you meditate, expect a shift in your thinking. Now is the perfect time to go for great things in your business and life. So start thinking about big increase and big, exciting things happening for you right now. What you focus on tends to expand in your life. When you start focusing on feeling happy, successful and rich, then you’ll attract more of that. You are already attracting into your life what you think you are worth and what you think you deserve. During your meditation time, you have to shift your thinking from thinking about any kind of lack, limitations or low-level success!
